Sports News: As Virat Kohli makes his return for the ODI series against Australia, cricket fans and statisticians are excited about the possibility of new records from one of the greatest white-ball players in the world. Kohli will play his first match in Perth, marking his first appearance since India won the ICC Champions Trophy. In that tournament, he scored 218 runs in five games, including a century against Pakistan and 84 runs against Australia in the semifinal. The 36-year-old Indian batsman is close to achieving several important milestones in ODIs and limited-overs cricket.

Approaching Major Run-Scoring Records

Kohli needs only 54 more runs to become the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history. So far, he has scored 14,181 runs in 302 matches from 290 innings, with an average of 57.88, including 51 centuries and 74 fifties. This would surpass Kumar Sangakkara’s record of 14,234 runs in 404 matches. In overall limited-overs cricket, Kohli is also near another big milestone. He needs 68 more runs to go past Sachin Tendulkar’s combined total of 18,436 runs. Kohli has currently scored 18,369 runs, adding together 14,181 runs in ODIs and 4,188 runs in T20Is.

Century Records and Overseas Achievements

If Kohli scores another century, he will hold the record for most centuries in a single format. Currently, he shares this with Sachin Tendulkar, who has 51 centuries in Tests, while Kohli has 51 in ODIs. Another century would also become his 30th in overseas conditions, making him the Asian player with the most centuries outside Asia, surpassing Tendulkar’s 29 overseas centuries. This series in Australia will also help Kohli prepare for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
